Chantilly, VA - May 7, 2009 - The widespread use of Adobe Acrobat and Reader means the recently announced security vulnerability has put at risk the data and servers of huge numbers of individual computer users, businesses, and government organizations that routinely use PDF documents. Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard prevents the execution of code maliciously imbedded in PDF documents that could easily steal financial records, health and prescription data, or system login credentials. Legacy anti-virus/spyware software products that rely on signatures are unlikely to identify malicious PDF files because they are easily disguised to elude detection.
The remediation actions for those without AppGuard are similar to those issued month after month for these types of attacks. Users must not only disable functions in Adobe Acrobat but also features in their web browsers and web browser plug-ins. Those with the knowledge and time to implement these temporary, technical workarounds will experience inconveniences and confusion as the PDF viewing experience is altered. Later, they must reverse all of these temporary workarounds after a security patch is eventually released and installed. In the meantime, businesses struggle to secure their systems while they wait weeks for patches.
Computers with AppGuard security software
* Are already protected
* May safely open PDF documents
* Require none of the workarounds described above
* Are protected from the next outbreak
AppGuard is a "set and forget" solution that blocks these attacks without any configuration by the end-user. It protects computers by guarding the applications that run on them instead of comparing every inbound file or communication to an endless list of known malware, using unreliable heuristics, and without prompting users to make technical allow/deny security choices.
Anti-virus/spyware products effectively stop old malware. Adding AppGuard more than doubles a computer's protection by stopping new malware.
"Users must wake up and realize that existing AntiVirus protection isn't enough, " stated Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. "People are losing their personal information and companies are losing intellectual property every single day by attacks that target these types of vulnerabilities."
Desktop administrators, analysts, and reporters would search long and hard to find a simpler, less intrusive means to stopping zero-day attacks such as these malicious PDF documents. AppGuard was developed for consumers, businesses, and governments that want protection from sophisticated, zero-day malware attacks without complex configurations, burdensome operations, confusing security prompts, and reduced PC performance. Anyone may download a free, fully-functional 30-day AppGuard trial to see this for themselves.
