IndieVolume is extremly useful for VoIP applications. When application marked as "exclusive" plays a sound, IndieVolume automatically mutes all other applications. IndieVolume allows per-application selection of playback device. For example, if you have built-in sound card and SoundBlaster as second sound card, or USB/Bluetooth headset, you can configure certain applications play on built-in sound card, and others play on SoundBlaster or USB headset, fully employing your audio hardware.

Often you have been in the situation when you are listening to the music, and suddenly some application loudly shouts or dings. You get upset, and to prevent these shouts, you go to application preferences, and configure the application not to output any sound at all. Ultimately, you will turn off sounds for all applications, except your music or video player. Eventually, you will have soundless home/work Windows environment.
With IndieVolume you wouldn't be forced to turn sounds off, instead you would configure applications to sound ok in front of each other, so none application would shout or ding.
