The 3.5 release of the VShell® Secure Shell server adds optional support for FTPS (FTP over SSL), makes configuration easier with Control Panel updates, and introduces new logging options

Albuquerque, N.M. (August 21, 2008) -- For organizations that need to close security holes created by the use of standard FTP, the VShell 3.5 server from VanDyke Software®, Inc. now offers three new editions with FTP over SSL support.

“In many network environments, securing standard FTP traffic is a policy requirement -- and it’s also a best practice, ” said Jeff P. Van Dyke, President of VanDyke Software. “We’ve supported the Secure Shell SFTP protocol since the first release of VShell in 2000, but many of our customers still need to provide FTP. FTPS support in VShell 3.5 gives organizations an additional option for providing file transfer without putting critical data or systems at risk.”

“Our customers connect to a range of remote servers and have asked for protocol flexibility, ” continued Van Dyke. "Now they can select either the standard VShell with Secure Shell SFTP support, or the VShell server that includes support for both SFTP and FTPS."

VShell 3.5 also improves configurability and expands logging options. Support for W3C extended log file format lets system administrators use third party log tools to analyze VShell activity. In addition, all log messages can be sent to a remote syslog or syslog ng server, or optionally to the Windows Event Log.

The larger VShell Control Panel has an updated layout for the Virtual Roots page, with sortable columns on the Virtual Roots, User Database, and RunAs Commands pages. A VShell Control Panel User Database page gives system administrators the ability to configure VShell-specific users in the new Internal User Database, with VShell-defined users separate from Windows System accounts.

The VShell Secure Shell server replaces Telnet and FTP for secure network administration and end-user access on Windows and UNIX platforms. Precision control over privileges, the ability to fine-tune your Secure Shell environment, and a wide selection of strong authentication methods give you a flexible solution that grows with your evolving security policies. VanDyke Software also develops client applications for use with VShell and other Secure Shell servers. SecureCRT® is the tool of choice for IT professionals who are responsible for network administration and end-user access where security is critical, combining a feature-filled terminal emulator with the security of the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol. SecureFX® is a versatile file transfer application that supports SFTP, FTP over SSL, as well as standard FTP.
