John Best, President of ToucanMultimedia.com, just announced the release of a new version of WebPen, the web application that allows online documents, agreements, and forms to be signed online on websites in the traditional manner with a hand-written signature, using the mouse or touchpad as a pen.
The use of paperless documents with electronic signatures is rapidly increasing on the internet as e-commerce expands. It offers significant advantages over the use of paper documents including - it avoids lost sales due to the delay and hassle required to print, sign and fax paper documents (soon everyone will expect this convenience), and it helps automate backend processing and document storage.

The introduction of WebPen in late 2006, heralded a better alternative to PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) or "digital signature" schemes that have been touted by their developers as an alternative to the traditional hand written signature. PKI systems have been slow to gain acceptance in E-commerce due to several inherent problems: the scheme uses long, complex, passwords that must be stored somewhere, and are therefore susceptible to theft; PKI is shrouded in confusing terminology; and, it depends on a third party certificate authority to which fees must be paid, and which could go out of business at any time.

WebPen is fast becoming the method of choice for authenticating online documents because it builds upon centuries of tradition and legal precedent, it is fast, simple, doesn’t confuse the user, and it creates a permanent signature image. Additionally, as companies move to paperless accounting and commerce, WebPen facilitates backend operations by eliminating the need to scan documents, since
the signature is already in digital form. WebPen is especially suitable for authentication of credit card transactions on the net because the graphical signature with WebPen can be compared with the signature on file at the bank.

The new version, WebPen 1.02, features a larger signature, signature verification, easier installation, and other improvements.
